The Nike Blazer was a billboard for Nike, helping to make the Swoosh synonymous with the young company. As a reminder of their Oregon roots, Nike named the Nike Blazer after the Portland Trailblazers, but one of the first NBA players to wear the shoe was George “The Iceman” Gervin. At one point, Gervin was given a special version of the Blazer that featured his “Iceman” nickname on the heel tab instead of “Nike.” It is possible that the Nike Blazer was the first sneaker with player-exclusive colorways at the time, when player-exclusive sneakers were not a trend. Nike began to focus on their Air collection as the 1980s approached, and the Blazer soon became obsolete, going from a performance basketball shoe to a cost-friendly lifestyle sneaker. Skateboarders were attracted to the Blazer because of its low price point, as it had great skateboarding features. During the mid-2000s, Nike SB introduced Zoom Air cushioning and padded collars to the Blazer to make it even more skateboard-friendly. With their 2006 Nike SB Blazer collaboration, Supreme New York put the Blazer at the center of street culture for the first time. There have been countless colorways and collaborations released on the Nike Blazer since then. As Virgil Abloh’s first and most-recognized collection with Nike, the Nike Blazer Off-White The Ten was one of the most recognizable collaborations. Featuring exposed foam edges, sheer tooling, and a vintage aesthetic, the design was reconstructed. Japanese label sacai’s collaboration Blazer series has also gained a great deal of acclaim due to its warped design philosophy. In addition to collaborations, many general release Nike Blazers are still in high demand, such as the Nike Blazer Mid 77 Vintage, which harkens back to the original Blazer colorway from 1973.
